We are learning about European explorers of the New World. Students will complete two assessments on this unit of study: a research and presentation project and an objective test.
For the research and presentation, students are working in small groups to research one of six explorers: John Cabot, Vasco Nunez Balboa, Juan Ponce de Leon, Christopher Columbus, Henry Hudson, or Jacques Cartier. Each group will prepare a poster and present to the class information on the explorer's nationality, dates of exploration, sponsor, reasons for exploration, obstacles faced, and accomplishments. Students listening to the presentations will take notes on a graphic organizer.
After all the groups have presented, each student in the class should have a chart completely filled out with the information about each of the six explorers.
Participation in the group research and presentation is worth one assessment grade. The link below shows how students can earn a 100 on this assessment.

To help prepare for the objective test, students have been provided the study guide found on this link:
These flash cards can also help students prepare for the test:
Students received a homework packet today which is due next Friday, November 6.
Students also received a math worksheet today on lesson 8.4. Though the instructions on the page tell students to estimate products, students should find exact products, using the method of their choice, and showing their work on notebook paper. Many students began this assignment after they finished their social studies test. This assignment is due Monday, Nov. 2.
We are studying 3 digit by 2 digit multiplication. Morning math class students will take a test on this skill next Thursday, November 12, and students in the afternoon math class will take the test next Wednesday, November 11. On the test students will be asked to use partial products to solve multiplication problems, and they will be asked to solve multistep word problems.
We have also been using protractors to measure angles. Students will take a quiz on this skill Friday afternoon, November 6. They will be asked to measure angles and state identify each angle as acute, obtuse, or right.
Students are bringing home today, Monday, August 31, for the first time, their Weekly Folder. Please click the link below to learn about Weekly Folders.
